Australian Senator Pauline Hanson has been suspended for one week after entering Parliament wearing a burka in a protest aimed at pushing for a nationwide ban on full face coverings.
Hanson attempted to introduce a bill banning such garments in public, but when lawmakers blocked her move, she returned to the chamber dressed in a black burka. The act sparked immediate outrage, with several senators condemning it as racist and disrespectful toward Muslim Australians.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong moved a censure motion against Hanson, saying she had been “parading prejudice as protest for decades.” The motion passed with a strong majority.
Hanson defended her actions on Facebook, writing: “If they don’t want me wearing it — ban the burka.” She previously staged a similar protest in 2017, which also drew heavy criticism.
