Australia’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Neil Hawkins, hosted a vibrant reception to commemorate Australia Day, underscoring the enduring ties between Australia and Pakistan. The event, attended by distinguished guests including Pakistan’s Federal Minister of Commerce, Jam Mir Kamal Khan, highlighted the multifaceted relationship between the two nations.
Minister Kamal, addressing the gathering as the chief guest, emphasized the need for further enhancement of bilateral relations, citing the friendly political, economic, and defense ties shared by Australia and Pakistan. He underscored Pakistan’s commitment to nurturing its growing relationship with Australia, noting the significant support provided by Australia as a development partner across various sectors.
Highlighting the burgeoning trade volume, Minister Jam Kamal noted that bilateral trade between the two countries has reached $1 billion, yet expressed optimism for greater potential yet to be realized. He outlined the current trade dynamics, including Pakistan’s exports of textile, rice, surgical, sports, and steel products to Australia, alongside imports of canola oil, chickpeas, pulses, corn, and raw materials.
The minister also emphasized opportunities for collaboration in the agricultural sector, particularly in expanding mango exports to Australia. Recognizing the contributions of the Pakistani diaspora, which numbers around 200,000 in Australia, Minister Kamal applauded their role in the country’s development.
High Commissioner Hawkins echoed Minister Kamal’s sentiments, emphasizing the shared values and aspirations between Australia and Pakistan. He reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting a democratic, inclusive, prosperous, and stable Pakistan, in alignment with its Constitution.
Furthermore, Hawkins highlighted the longstanding collaboration between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research and Pakistan, spanning four decades. He emphasized the importance of sustainable water management practices and agricultural development, essential for both nations amidst the challenges posed by climate change.
Hawkins also lauded the role of Australian-Pakistani diaspora and alumni in fostering closer ties between the two countries. He commended the increasing Australian engagement in Pakistan’s mining sector and the development of its dairy industry.
The event, attended by various dignitaries, including politicians, diplomats, media representatives, businesses, and development partners, underscored the commitment of both nations to strengthening their bilateral relationship for mutual prosperity and cooperation.
