The African Embassies and High Commissions in Pakistan came together to commemorate Africa Day with great enthusiasm and spirit. The event, held in Islamabad, was a vibrant showcase of Africa’s rich cultural heritage and a testament to the strong diplomatic ties and mutual cooperation between Pakistan and African nations.
Federal Minister for Energy Mussadaq Masood Malik graced the occasion as the chief guest, alongside the Dean of the African Group Mohamed Karmoune, Ambassador of Morocco, and the heads of missions from various African countries. The celebration featured a ceremonial cake cutting, symbolizing unity and friendship among the nations.
The event was anchored by the Deputy Head of Mission of the Tunisian Embassy, Dorsaf Maaroufi, who emphasized the significance of Africa Day under the auspices of the African Union. In his welcoming speech, the High Commissioner of Mauritius Soobadar, expressed gratitude to the Dean of the African Diplomatic Group for organizing such a splendid evening and welcomed all attendees.
Prominent figures from various walks of life attended the event, including Peer Naqib ur Rehman, Kashmala Tariq, Mohamed Yahya, adding to the evening’s grandeur. The gathering provided an excellent platform for cultural exchange and strengthening diplomatic relations.
A highlight of the celebration was the array of traditional food stalls set up by the participating African nations, including Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Kenya, and Nigeria. These stalls offered a taste of Africa’s diverse culinary heritage, delighting the guests with a variety of traditional dishes.
The main reason for the celebration of Africa Day is to promote the unity and solidarity of African states, safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states, advance worldwide collaboration within the United Nations framework, and harmonize policies of member states in all areas.
The event was a resounding success, reflecting the deep bonds of friendship and cooperation between Pakistan and the African nations. It served as a reminder of the shared values and aspirations that unite these countries and the continuous efforts to foster stronger bilateral and multilateral relations. At the conclusion of Africa Day, special shields were presented to the Chief Guest and the Dean of the African Group. This gesture honored their significant contributions and support, marking the event with a memorable acknowledgment of their roles in fostering unity and collaboration within the African community.
Africa Day is observed annually to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union (AU), on May 25, 1963. The day is celebrated worldwide to honor the diverse cultures and achievements of the African continent and to promote unity and solidarity among African nations.
