GUJRANWALA: Liver diseases, particularly hepatitis, are a major health concern in Pakistan. The country has one of the world’s highest rates of hepatitis C, which is a significant cause of liver disease ranging from mild illness to serious lifelong conditions like cirrhosis or liver cancer. Factors contributing to the spread of hepatitis include unsafe injections, use of unhygienic dental instruments, and reuse of razor blades by barbers3. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a type of liver cancer, is also a growing problem, with hepatitis C and B, dietary carcinogens, and lifestyle changes being major threats4.
Addressing the Issues
Efforts are being made to tackle these health challenges. For instance, the Government of Punjab has introduced policies to ensure the use of auto-disable syringes in the health sector and improve infectious waste control. There’s also a need for increased public awareness and better prevention and screening for liver diseases.
