Vienna  — In Austria and across other European countries, clocks will be turned back by one hour on Sunday, October 26, marking the end of Daylight Saving Time (DST) for this year.

The system of changing time in Europe was formally introduced as a European law in 1981, aimed at making better use of daylight during the summer months. However, the practice itself dates back to the early 1970s in Western Europe, when it was adopted to “extend” daylight hours — thereby improving productivity, energy efficiency, and work performance.

As per tradition, Daylight Saving Time ends on the last Sunday of October each year, when clocks are set 60 minutes back. The standard time will remain in effect until the last weekend of March, when clocks will once again move forward by one hour to mark the beginning of the summer schedule.
