In a ceremony hosted at the Embassy of Poland, the AGHS Legal Aid Cell was honored with the prestigious Polish Prize of Sérgio Vieira de Mello for its unwavering commitment to human rights and service to marginalized communities in Pakistan. The award, established in 2003, commemorates Sérgio Vieira de Mello, the late United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and recognizes efforts to promote peaceful coexistence and human rights globally.

The ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries, including Olyntho Vieira, Ambassador of Brazil; Alex Berg von Linde, Ambassador of Sweden; and Madam Fumiko, Deputy Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Pakistan. The event also welcomed Nicolas Galey, Ambassador of France, who shared personal insights into the life and legacy of Sérgio Vieira de Mello, highlighting his decades of service in advancing international law, combating terrorism, and advocating for refugee rights.

Speaking at the occasion, the Polish Ambassador Maciej Pisarski emphasized AGHS Legal Aid Cell’s impactful work under the leadership of the late Asma Jahangir, a revered human rights activist. Founded by Jahangir and her colleagues, AGHS continues to provide free legal assistance to vulnerable groups, especially women, while promoting human rights awareness and empowerment. The ambassador noted that the organization’s dedication reflects the universal values of justice, equality, and dignity, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration globally.

The Sérgio Vieira de Mello Prize, supported by the embassies of Brazil and Sweden and the UNHCR, underscores Poland’s solidarity with human rights defenders worldwide. The award aligns with the values of the Solidarność (Solidarity) movement, which played a pivotal role in dismantling communism in Central and Eastern Europe.

The event concluded with an appeal for donations to support the pupils of Mashal Model School in Bari Imam. Contributions can be made at the donation box placed in the embassy’s hallway.

This recognition of AGHS Legal Aid Cell reaffirms the importance of grassroots activism in addressing global human rights challenges and inspires collective action to uphold the legacy of figures like Sérgio Vieira de Mello and Asma Jahangir.
