This evening, Gallery 6 proudly opened its doors to art enthusiasts and media professionals alike for the unveiling of “5 Sirius,” an exhibition featuring the winners of the prestigious national biennial “Arjumand Painting Award 2023.” The event, held at Gallery 6 in Islamabad, commenced on Friday, April 26, and will run until May 1, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of contemporary Pakistani art.
The “Arjumand Painting Award,” established by Gallery 6 in 2015, aims to recognize and celebrate emerging Pakistani artists who demonstrate exceptional talent and skill in the field of painting. Through this award, Gallery 6 provides a platform for artists to gain recognition and launch their careers in the art world.
The fifth edition of the “Arjumand Painting Award,” held in November 2023, saw five talented artists emerge as winners, each receiving cash prizes totaling over one million Rupees. Appropriately named “sirius” after the brightest star in the night sky, the exhibition features the works of Quratulain Dar (1st Prize), Safwan Bashir (2nd Prize), Sadia Rathore (3rd Prize), and Bazil Habib and Imran Mughal, both awarded Merit Prizes.
Quratulain Dar, a graduate of Punjab University College of Art & Design, explores gender dynamics and societal power structures in her artwork, drawing inspiration from urban environments. Safwan Bashir, specializing in miniature painting from NCA, Rawalpindi, reflects on humanity’s relationship with nature, urging viewers to contemplate their role in preserving the environment. Sadia Rathore, drawing upon her Baloch heritage, sheds light on societal injustices such as child labor in carpet-making through her intricate paintings. Bazil Habib, inspired by urban nightscapes, evokes visceral responses through his dynamic compositions. Imran Mughal, specializing in textile art, advocates for multiculturalism and diversity, challenging established norms to unlock new creative potentials.
Earlier, The exhibition was inaugurated by Amir Khan, Commissioner at Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP), and Arjumand, Curator of Gallery 6, alongside the talented artists themselves. During his remarks, Amir Khan, as the Chief Guest, expressed appreciation for the extraordinary artworks on display and encouraged the artists to showcase their talents nationally and internationally to represent Pakistan on a global stage.
The “5 Sirius” exhibition promises to captivate audiences with its depth, innovation, and thought-provoking narratives. Art lovers are invited to visit Gallery 6 from 11 am to 7 pm until May 1 to experience the brilliance of these emerging Pakistani artists.
