Under the auspices of the European Union-funded Energy Plus programme, rural communities in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral are set to experience a significant enhancement in access to clean energy solutions. The Aga Khan Rural Support Programme (AKRSP), in collaboration with various Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) agencies, will spearhead the implementation of this transformative initiative.

The Energy Plus programme is designed to facilitate a sustainable shift towards renewable energy sources by directing investments towards energy generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure. Moreover, the programme will prioritize energy efficiency measures to catalyze private sector-led economic growth, with active engagement from local governmental bodies and civil society organizations.

With an ambitious target of reaching 350,000 beneficiaries, the strategic partnership between the European Union and its implementing partner, the Aga Khan Foundation, aims to significantly impact the lives of rural inhabitants in the region.

The official launch ceremony, held at Gilgit Serena and attended by distinguished guests including Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan, H.E. Dr. Riina Kionka, Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, and representatives from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, marked the commencement of this groundbreaking initiative.

Dr. Riina Kionka, Ambassador of the European Union to Pakistan, affirmed Team Europe’s unwavering commitment to the people of Gilgit Baltistan, stating, “The Energy Plus programme will revolutionize rural communities through the introduction of innovative, clean, and renewable energy solutions.”
